The Circle

The Circle

In the beginning, the Circle was pure white. Heaven was in harmony. Then, the Archangel Lucifer rebelled. The circle was no longer pure white, for black had begun to stain its surface. Then, the most powerful angel and most loved, henceforth known only as Satan, rebelled and fell to the dark regions. With him went one third of the Heavenly Host. The circle was now half black and half white, divided by a sinuous line. God gave Satan the task of being the punisher of sinners and the culler of the weak-of-heart as punishment for his desertion. God also gave him an angel to be his Left Hand. Satan, with a remarkable and sincere show of good will, returned the Archangel Gabriel to Heaven as God's Left Hand. Gabriel never had been a full angel, but an ancient demon, however, he gave his whole life and soul to God as a warrior and a protector of good. The Circle now had a spot of light in the darkness, and a spot of darkness in the light. Hundreds of thousands of years passed, and the balance was sustained. In a strange stroke of the power games played deep in the Abyss, Satan lost power to one of the Greater Demons, Mephistopheles. After three short years with the legions of Damned at its control, Mephistopheles had invaded most of Heaven and amplified his power beyond reckoning. The circle was no nearly black, save for a waning gibbous on one side with a spike of light piercing the midst of the darkness that once was light.

On the point of that spike of light, near-surrounded by towering clouds of darkness, lies a city: The City of Angels. The City has great woering buildings filled with the Heavenly Host. The buildings themselves are like cathedrals turned into skyscrapers, towering structures that echo power and history. At night, the many pavement streets are lit by the light of Heaven, which is the very substance of The City. In the ever-present darkness, The City is a beacon for all those who would follow it to salvation...

And a lamp that draws demons like moths to a flame.
